How cheap is the fuel station next to you?

This week I am going to look at the fuel prices variations and ranking of fuel stations in a specific area.

I chose to focus on the ULP retail price of the fuel stations of Osborne Park, one of Perth suburbs, for a period of two months from 1 July 2019 to 31 August 2019.

It is interesting to notice that each station follows a different pricing strategy.

BP Connect Main Street

BP shows a near perfect regular pattern of prices peaking on Tuesdays and gradually decreasing until the next Monday. This is the same pattern observed on average on all Perth metro fuel stations (see my post : Perth fuel price are cheap on Mondays and shocking on Tuesdays). BP highest prices on Tuesdays are close to Perth highest prices whereas its lowest prices on Mondays are usually well above Perth lowest prices.

BP is actually an expensive distributors (see my post : What are the cheapest fuel stations in Perth metro area?). This particular BP station in Osborne Park is no exception to this rule.

Caltex Woolworth Osborne Park

This station is among the cheapest in Perth (see my post : What are the cheapest fuel stations in Perth metro area?).

While it is on average one of  the cheapest, this is not the cheapest everyday. Actually, on some (rare) days it is among the most expensive.

What is striking is that compared to the station BP Connect Main Street, this Caltex barely shows any regular weekly pattern. Mondays are the cheapest and Tuesdays the expensive days, but apart from that the price curve is very irregular.

Kwik Fuel Osborne Park

This station is another interesting example of a different pricing strategy. The prices at this Kwik station are completely “flat” : they do not follow a weekly pattern, they only vary with the global oil price movement.

Puma Osborne Park

Puma Osborne Park prices follows the classic Perth weekly pattern.

United Osborne Park

United Osborne Park prices also follows a weekly pattern. However, prices tend to reach a low plateau from Fridays to Mondays.

You can check the patterns of the fuel stations in your own suburb in Perth, Western Australia by using the live Power BI report below.
