This month I created an animated map in Power BI.
This pretty cool animation illustrates the Perth weekly fuel prices variation (see my previous post on this topic Perth fuel prices are cheap on Mondays…).
On Wednesdays the map is covered in red as most fuel stations charge a very high price and then map then gradually fades into colder colours (blue and green) until the trough on Tuesdays.
For the nitty-gritty details: the colours shows the difference with the cheapest station of the day. In reality, the cheapest metro price is fairly constant over a relatively short period of time. For example, in August 2020, the cheapest metro ULP price is always 99 cents, take or give 1 cent. The map is animated over a fortnight, therefore you can also see the colours as showing the difference between a the price of a particular fuel station on a particular day with cheapest price In Perth metro for the whole fortnight.
Another point to note, there is no option to zoom on the map and animate this zoomed area. As soon as you press the arrow to animate the map, the map will zoom out. This is the behaviour of the default Power BI map.
Finally, thanks to rmprozil , the publisher of the free custom visual Play Axis (Dynamic Slicer) . I had published a static map before (see Map of Perth Fuel Prices) and this visual enabled me to animate the map.
